In a developing country like India, cycles are the most commonly used  modes of road transport. There is a strong cycling culture in India for  cycle is a poor man’s vehicle. India, a country of villages thrives in  the number of bicycles for,    majority of people in India; most  frequently use bicycles as a chief means of transport for commuting to  work, shopping, schools, and colleges and for other general purposes. In  India cycles are an essential modes of transport for the poor but for  the rich, cycling is a hobby. For the old cycles provide a simple way to  keep their health in good condition. Moderate cycling does not demand  an exertion of a high order like other gymnastic devices and is thus  highly suitable for the old. Bicycles in India, since their introduction  in the 19th century have had considerably affected Indian society in  industrial, social and cultural fields. Indeed, in India a child’s life  begins with a cycle either two wheeled or three wheeled. All Indian  families irrespective of their status
provide cycles for their children. And at the age of ten or twelve it becomes a sport for children.
Bicycles, with their mobility, recreational and fitness solutions  have created a strong bike culture in India. Being an effective mode of  transportation cycle is best for short to moderate distances. Compared  to motor vehicles, bicycles give us innumerable benefits. Apart from  exercise it provides an alternative to the use of fossil fuels cycles do  not create noise or air pollution. Cycles reduce traffic congestion.  They are easier to park .they are accessible on both roads and paths.  These advantages are at less financial costs to the user as well as  society. Moreover bicycles are greatly maneuverable.

In  India the first company that manufactured electric bicycles is Avon  Cycles. Amazingly this new brand has the capacity of covering a distance  of 40 kilometers on a single 36V lead acid, sealed and rechargeable  battery. You can ride it at a maximum speed of 23kmph. Though expensive  it has come as a solution for the urban people who are exposed to the  severity of irritation of heavy road traffic, parking blues and  pollution.
Bicycles have gained a great popularity as a form of recreation and  are being used as children toys, adult fitness, military and police  applications and competitive sports. The present Indian scenario of  worst kind of traffic and environmental problems can come to an end if  we switch on to bicycles as an effective means of transportation.
